Richard Wilmot
I bought my first Super 8 Camera at the age of 13. Making short dramatic films with my friends or documenting the family vacation, cinematography was my passion.
After finishing school I joined Colorfilm laboratories. Positions included vault keeper, film processer and optical effects printer.
Studying film production at North Sydney TAFE, I joined the ABC as a Cinecamera assistant advancing to Cinecameraman shooting news, current affairs, sport, children’s entertainment and documentaries.
My next job was at Telescan Productions working as a Director/Cameraman shooting industrial documentaries and commercials.
The chance to go to the USA and Canada working as a freelance documentary cinematographer was an amazing opportunity. Clients included The National Film Board of Canada, CBC, Discovery Channel, A&E, HGTV, NHK Japan, RTE Ireland and TV2 Denmark.
Other broadcast clients included ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX, DISNEY, MTV, MLB, NHL, NBA, Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
Toronto became known as ‘Hollywood North’ and by combining my documentary experience with my Steadicam skills, I was soon working on Features, TV Series and MOW’s.
I continue to work internationally as a Director of Photography and Camera/Steadicam Operator.
My trademark is “Tell the story through the image”.
